[instrumental intro music] [Don Pash, Producer] Good evening, ladies and gentlemen and welcome once again to Encore, a program presented in cooperation with the Music Department of Michigan State College. This evening we have a very special program planned for you, we have as our guest Dr. Ernst Victor Wolff, internationally renowned pianist and head of the Music Department, uh, Piano Department here at Michigan State College. Dr. Wolff it's a pleasure to welcome you again to Encore and we're all looking forward to a fine piano recital. [Dr. Ernst Wolff] A few months ago I gave a recital here on the harpsichord giving examples of harpsichord compositions by Scarlatti, Rameau and Handel. Today I want to follow this up by a typical piano program and I will play compositions by Beethoven, Haydn, Chopin, Debussy and Mussorgsky. In Beethoven we have the great thinker and philosopher, in Haydn, one of Beethoven's teachers. In this particular piece he will show his great sense of humor, which is to be found in a great many of his compositions. Then I will turn to Chopin who was one of the first who really got the inspiration out of the piano as such. Debussy created a new style for various reasons. I just want to mention his playing with colors which gave him the title of the impressionist among the composers. The last number will be a Russian dance by Mussorgsky, which will speak for itself. I will announce the single numbers before I play them. Thank you very much. [Dr. Wolff playing Beehtoven] Now we turn to Joseph Haydn. I play a rondo taken from a sonata which consists only of two movements. This is the last movement. [Dr. Wolff playing Haydn] Now to Frederich Chopin, one of his very dramatic Nocturnes. [Dr. Wolff playing Chopin] Now a portrait in Debussy. The title is La fille au choude l'un, which is the girl with the flaxen hair. [Dr. Wolff playing Debussy] The last number on this program: Mussorgsky's Russian dance called Hopak. In the beginning you hear the fiddlers tune up the instruments. It's characteristic of the Hopak that from the second half on it gets faster and faster. Dr. Wolff playing Mussorgsky's Hopak] Don Pash] I would like to thank Dr. Ernst Victor Wolff, head of the piano department here at Michigan State College for a very fine and a very inspiring recital this evening and I would like to have him know that we always appreciate his making a visit to the studios at WKAR TV. Next week at this very same time we will present a special program of modern dance by Orchesis, the modern dance group here on our campus. Won't you join us from 7:30 to 8 p.m. next week?
