Michigan State College Television and the Department of Agricultural Engineering presents 365 days with Home air conditioning with Mary Holtman, Home Economist, International Harvester Company. [Mary Holtman] How's the weather treating you today? I hope real good. But if it isn't, don't worry about it. Stick around for 10 minutes and it'll change. It's amazing how much time we spend talking about the weather, isn't it? The very first thing in the morning we turn on the radio to find out what the weatherman has to say. Whether it's going to be warm and if so, we won't wear a sweater. If it's cold, we'll wear it. Maybe it's going to rain so we'll take our umbrella, pick up our slicker. Regardless of what the weather it is, we dress to suit the occasion, don't we? Well, because we spend so much time talking about the weather, I'd like to talk to you a little bit about air conditioning because with air conditioning, we aren't too as much concerned about the weather as we formerly were. I think all of us just really heave a sigh of relief when we think about the comfort that we can get, for instance, in going to a theater to see a show. Maybe the show isn't just exactly what we'd like to see, but because it is air conditioned, it's comfortable, we'll take it in anyway. Or it might be that we're looking for an air conditioned restaurant, one where we can sit down and eat our food in comfort and not be too warm. Usually, when we do that, we select a better diet than if the room isn't air conditioned. Then the third place that I know all of you enjoy having air conditioning is in the shopping center when you buy clothing, shoes, dresses, if you're buying groceries, hardware, just whatever it might be. You know, I imagine when you pick up your basket or bundle of groceries, you probably ask the girl if she wouldn't like to put a slice of that air conditioning into your basket so that you can take it home with you. Well, more and more air conditioning is becoming a thing that most modern homes have. So I think I'd like to talk to you a little bit about that air conditioning. Well, what does air conditioning do for you? Well, probably the first thing you think about is it makes you nice and cool. That's the thing I think about. But when I take a little more time to consider it, I find that there are five things that an air conditioner can do for us. The one is that it filters the air. The second thing it does dehumidifies the air. The third thing, it cools the air. The fourth thing is it circulates the air, and the last but not least, the fifth, it heats the air. Here I mentioned that one of the most important things that an air conditioner probably does for us and it cools us off. But there are times when we would like to be a little warmer. I'd like to take you over this air conditioner and show you some of the insides of it. We've taken out of the outer portion so that you can get in real close to it. Mention first that the air conditioner filters the air and here's the filter right here in the front and all the air that comes from the outside and all the air that's taken from the room goes through this filter. If you look pretty close here, you can see where we have some dust collecting here on the filter. In fact, we're going to remove this one in just a minute. This dust, of course, collects on our furniture, and then we have to dust quite a bit, or it might collect on the draperies and then we have to send them to the cleaners. The fewer times we can send them to the cleaners, the better we save money, don't we? Or it might be the walls or wallpaper, paint, and the like. We don't have to replace quite as often. We don't have to wash it too much. We can remove this this filter, I should say, by just lifting it out in this fashion. And then we can place a clean filter in its place, and that's all there is to it. It's just as simple as that. Not only does the filter take out the dust, but it also takes out the pollen and people that have hay fever are very pleased with that because it makes them feel so much more comfortable. People that have asthma or other allergies are also made more comfortable by air conditioning. The second thing that an air conditioner will do for you is to dehumidify the air, take the moisture out of it. How many times have you heard? It's not the heat, it's the humidity and probably you've said many times yourself. Here on the side of our air conditioner, you'll find some evaporator coils. Those are just exactly like the coils in your refrigerator and this is where the moisture collects this frost. It takes the moisture off your skin, makes you feel much more comfortable. The third thing that an air conditioner will do for you is to cool. Here on the side, we have the control for turning it to the position that will give you the right amount of coolness for your room. People that have heart trouble, older people have a hard time when the weather is hot and with cool, the cooling that you can get from your air conditioner makes it much more comfortable for them and for you too, I guess really it knows on age. The fourth thing that an air conditioner will do for you, it'll circulate the air. You can't see the fan that I have here, but there is one located in this area and this fan keeps the air circulating. I know you turned on a regular fan many times to circulate the air and how much better you felt when you did. It took some of that moisture from your skin, it cooled you off, made you feel much better. Not only will this fan circulate the air from the outside and the air from the inside. But if you were um cooking and some of the onion odor you'd like to get rid of it. Well, all you have to do is turn the fan on to exhaust and that'll take that onion odor out of the room, or it might be smoke that you're trying to remove. If the outside air is cool, maybe it won't be necessary for you to turn on the temperature control. We'll just turn on the fan and bring this cool air from the outside through our air conditioner into the room. Nice and filtered, very pleasant, very, uh comfortable then for you. Well, what are some of the things that we need to consider in selecting the size of an air conditioner. They come in various sizes and there's a few things that I think you should know before you go to talk with your dealer because he'll ask you about them. Over here on our freezer, I have a blackboard cloth. You're just ordinary piece of chalk and it's just real handy and you can jot yourself notes, you can jot notes to your family. Let's jot down some of the notes that we'll want to take to our dealer about the place that we're going to air condition. The first thing that we'll want to know is how many openings are in the room. By openings, we mean windows, doors, archways, and the like. The second, what's the size of the room? How long is it? How wide is it? We want to be sure to get those measurements accurate. And third, what exposure does that room have? Does it face the south? Does it face the north, east or west? We'll place that next. Here's another. Does that section of your house have some of the natural shade? Does it have some trees around it? Would it automatically be a little bit cooler than maybe perhaps another part of the house? So let's put that down too, because that's important. These are just some of the things that you will take to the dealer and have him look them over and help you in making a selection. Now, over here, we find that the Dealer has a chart that he will go by. This chart is according to the size of air conditioner and just what it'll do for you. Now, when you bought your freezer, they talked about cubic feet, didn't they? You might have a 20 cubic foot or 16 cubic foot. Both of those take a one third horsepower unit to operate. Notice here that we have horsepower indicated here for our air conditioners. There's a third half, three quarter, and 1 horsepower. Well, now, here's where the size of room comes in. He will say that the third horsepower unit will take care of the space of 270 square feet. Or for this large 1 horsepower, it will take care of 785 square feet. It also mentions the moisture removal. Of course, that's important. You know how much more comfortable you feel when it is, um, the humidity is down. We're removing this moisture. For our third horsepower unit, we can remove one and three tenths pints per hour and for the larger unit, the 1 horsepower is three and 25 100 pints per hour. Well, after we have that much information, we decide where we're going to place it, and do we have enough voltage to take care of it? If we're installing a third horsepower unit, we'll want to be sure that the voltage is 115. For the larger unit, it will take the 1 horsepower or 230 volts for that unit. Where are you going to place your air conditioner? I think sometimes in thinking about an air conditioner, we think first about sleeping comfortably, don't we? If we work hard all day and then have difficulty sleeping at night, then we perhaps would like to have an air conditioner in our bedroom. In that room, there are few people that will really get the advantage of it, but there will be a few. Or you might decide that you'd like to put in the living room. More members of the family can enjoy it in that room and even your guests can get in on the pleasure of your air conditioner. But for an all around everyday use, I think that the air conditioner fits very nicely into your kitchen because not only does the homemaker spend a great deal of her time in the kitchen, but also every member of the family. You know, that room may be the corner of the house, but it's a center of activity. Every member of the family considers it theirs. Not only do you prepare three meals a day, preserve food, take care of the laundry, the ironing, perhaps other tasks that fit themselves nicely into the kitchen because they're a little bit messy. You know, the entire kitchen can be washed up and kept spick and span, a lot better than in the living room or perhaps another room in the home. I'd like to show you where we've installed our air conditioner. Here we have our air conditioner in the center where we do most of our eating, perhaps studying, working on the books and the like. We took our drapery material, we selected a fabric the color from the drapery material and have used it in a plastic fabric on the outside of our conditioner. It really does fit in with the decoration very nicely, and it not only has a lot of utility, but it has a lot of beauty too. We've also taken this fabric and placed it on the front of our freezer and our refrigerator so that the colors blend nicely with the entire decoration of the room. It's very pleasant to work in. Color plays a big important part in the cheerfulness with which we can work. If it's very attractive, we really enjoy it. Add coolness, air conditioned comfort with a capital C, then we can work more efficiently, and I don't believe you'll have any trouble getting anyone to help you either. I hope that real soon you too will have an air conditioner in your kitchen.
