Comfort Zone
An oil painting portrait on canvas. On a bed covered with a white sheet, an Asian woman is posed with her body twisted. She is nude except for tan-colored underwear and is lying on her side, held up by her elbows with her hands in her brown hair. Her left leg is bent at the knee so her left foot touches the knee of her right leg. A light shines on her, illuminating the cool blue wall behind her.

Since being cut off from the world due to the pandemic, my bed became my everything. I withered away every single day in that space. My uncovered body is in a struggling and isolated position and the colour of the heavy and cold surroundings that weigh me down contrasts it. The worse my depression and health, the less I was able to be creative and productive. I was overwhelmed by hearing about Asian hate crimes in the media and simultaneously fearing that I would get infected with the virus. This is my own way of healing and being resilient as an artist. --Label design by exhibit curator Nancy DeJoy. Labels written by Ben Lash and his team in consultation with artist statements.
