As my mental health got worse during the pandemic and people around me started getting sick or dying, it seemed like the world wasn't concerned at all. My educational institutions continued on with courses as normal, expecting attendance and greatness during a time where no one felt like those were things they could deliver. I have felt trapped in my own mind, trapped in negativity, trapped in emptiness—but I can't show it. I was diagnosed with severe Major Depressive Disorder, Social Phobia, and Excoriation Disorder during the pandemic, so the themes of my pieces are related to my struggles with my mental illnesses. "Smile" was a concept sketch for a room exhibition I did for a class at the college I transferred from. I wanted to simulate what it is like to be depressed or stuck in feelings of depression while constantly being fed images of happiness or being told by the world around you that you need to be happy with your circumstances. --Label design by exhibit curator Nancy DeJoy.
