Ordinary Observations : A stay-At-Home Photo Book
A photo book. On the white cover is a square picture depicting the needles of a pine tree, the background out of focus. The title is written above the picture, reading "Ordinary Observations" in a yellow color. Beneath the picture in a smaller font are the words "a stay at home photo book by Amanda Clarke" with the beginning of each word capitalized respectively. Underneath is the year "2020" in the same yellow font. The first section of the book begins with the quote: "Why is the alphabet in that order? Is it because of that song?" and beneath that is the name "Steven Wright" in a yellow color. Alternating every other page is a small wooden game piece with a letter of the alphabet pictured in grayscale and the following page pictures an object that corresponds to that letter in color. Representing the letter "R" is a record player. In focus is the needle attached to a black head which reads "blue point no. 2" in a white font, the beginning of each word capitalized. The needle is resting in the grooves of a black, out of focus record. The second section begins with the quote: "Numbers rule the universe" and beneath that is the name "Pythagoras" in a yellow color. Every page within the second section has a single picture of an object that highlights a number one through 10. Representing the number five is a book on a bookshelf, sandwiched between two others. The red spine reads: "The five people you meet in heaven" in a white font. The third section begins with the quote: "Colors are the smiles of nature" and beneath that is the name "Leigh Hunt" in a yellow color. Every page within the third section has a picture of nature or an object that has a different color. The pages are ordered in the color of the rainbow. A page representing the color red is divided into two pictures. The top picture depicts a bushel of small, round, red berries on a thin branch. Two pale green leaves are attached by a stem, slightly out of focus like the rest of the background. The bottom picture is a raspberry branch. The small berries are individually attached to a thin brown stem, peaking out of the pale green leaves.

Over the years, I have honed my photography skills through nature and wildlife adventure travel. Because of the need to stay in place for safety during the pandemic, such travel was no longer possible. Wanting to maintain my photography hobby, I pivoted inward to take my camera and explore the world around me. My location of rural New Hampshire provided ample subjects for me to capture. Using the alphabet, numbers, and colors provided a great way to organize subjects for this creative project. The finished photo book served as a gift to family members across the miles. --Label design by exhibit curator Nancy DeJoy.
