My Daughter, the Hero
A mixed media collage. The background of the collage is various newspaper and magazine articles, all relating to COVID-19 and quarantine, some with text and others with imagery of COVID-19 cells, families, and people wearing masks. In the center of the collage is the oilpainting portrait of a healthcare worker. She is a fair-skinned woman with brown eyes and brown hair braided into two pigtails which rest on either side of her neck. She is wearing a COVID face shield that has a large blue band resting on her forehead, the clear shield covering her face. A white COVID mask rests on the bottom half of her face. The beginning of her shoulders are visible, adorned in dark blue hospital scrubs.

My daughter is an intensive care pulmonologist, flung into the midst of this pandemic. She practices in Alabama, but went to New York City to volunteer as extra help during their extraordinary battle in the early days of the pandemic. She's had to work extra hours, take a pay cut, and endure extreme stress during this time. The articles used in the collage were from the early days in the pandemic, focusing on how to live in this new isolation we were encountering, as well as fears of the virus. This piece was meant particularly to honor my daughter and all healthcare workers as they faced unusual amounts of stress and burnout during this pandemic. --Label design by exhibit curator Nancy DeJoy. Labels written by Ben Lash and his team in consultation with artist statements.
