During the pandemic, I took an online course in composition to help pass the time and connect with other musicians. Writing music became a wonderful outlet to counter the feelings of isolation that developed during the lockdown. When I was composing, I could escape the house by imagining far away places in my mind and putting these mental images into music. When I began writing this piece, I was reflecting on the isolation of the pandemic and the curtailing of the travel my husband and I had planned for our newly retired lives. Since I am 76 years old, I was careful about exposure to the virus and stayed inside for nearly 2 whole years. The composition expressed the freedom in nature that I wasn't able to enjoy in person. The music is intended to describe an eagle's flight, glacial movement, waterfalls, and grazing herds. --Label design by exhibit curator Nancy DeJoy.
