During the pandemic, I was forced to flee the US due to a disregard for safety measures. I found myself in Lisbon, Portugal, where the outdoor ambiance and beauty inspired me to create a series of paintings. Through the creation of these pieces, I searched for meaning and kept my sanity during lockdown. These paintings allowed me to recover some of my self-esteem after losing two major shows in China and California and having to sell and dispose of my artwork. Despite these challenges, I was able to continue creating and finding joy in my work. --Label design by exhibit curator Nancy DeJoy. Labels written by Ben Lash and his team in consultation with artist statements.

Page Info
1 of 4: Untitled 4. Part 01
A watercolor painting of colorful lines on white paper. At the center of the page are 4 wavy star shapes made from layered lines. One of these are green and blue, two are lime green and dark green with a red dot in the center, and another is red and blue. A dark green line, highlighted in yellow, wavers diagonally across the page, bending around the shapes. Behind it, a gray strip stretches across the page in the opposite direction, forming an X with the green line. A black paint splatter runs over the red shape, and drips a long black line that covers the full height of the paper.

2 of 4: Untitled 4. Part 02
An abstract painting made with water based paints on canvas. In the center of the piece, gray geometric shapes outlined in black are stacked on top of each other to create a square and triangular structure. Within the structure and gray shapes are organic and angular red shapes outlined in black. More organic forms fill the piece in orange and yellow. The background has muted strokes of red, orange, yellow, and purple and the same colors layered with white paint. At the top of the piece are short, downwards strokes of muddied greens and pinks.

3 of 4: Untitled 4. Part 03
An abstract painting made with water based paints on canvas. In the foreground is a tall tree with twisted black and green branches that reaches from the bottom to the top of the piece. The leaves of the tree are made of yellows, oranges, and greens. Thin blue strokes fall from the top of the tree and drip down to its roots. The roots span from the left to the right of the piece and are covering a pile of orange, red, yellow, and green. To the far left of the piece are short strokes of yellow, orange, and red that overlap each other. Reaching from the top left corner to the bottom right corner is a line of short red strokes. Behind the tree is the black outline of a building with many archways with a rounded tower-like structure to the right of it. The remainder of the background is white.

4 of 4: Untitled 4. Part 04
A multimedia drawing on white paper. Long and short strokes of color outlined in black form rectangular panels in hues of orange, red and yellow. These panels are lined up edge to edge, occasionally overlapping, to form a collage around the page with the smallest panels at the center.
