James writes to his wife, Anne Eliza (Payne) and an unnamed brother. He describes several skirmishes in which his regiment engaged Confederate forces in Tennessee (possibly as a part of the Knoxville Campaign). James sent fifty dollars to his mother for warm clothing, but then asks his brother to take a portion of the money and invest it in land.
