John writes to his son Alexander to update him on family matters, especially concerning Alexander';s brothers. John notes that George enlisted in the 30th Michigan Infantry just before Christmas, he is afraid the "feable" John Jr. will soon be drafted, and he is fed up with James' "disrespectful" attitude. John goes on to thank Alexander for sending home "very liberal" amounts of money and asks if he can also send tobacco seed along with directions on how to cure the leaves as they do "in the South." John then mentions that he has been hampered by an injured back for the past week and ends by disclosing his precise birthdate and age to Alexander.
