Davis reports on the status of one friend named Burnett who was sent home, and responds to his wife's information that people back in their hometown were calling Burnett a coward. He regards those men as cowards themselves, as Wisconsin is looking for one thousand more men to join the service and Davis doesn't anticipate to see any of them in the army. Burnett received a letter from one of the men captured by Confederates and recently released, and Davis included it in this letter to his wife. Confederate forces captured part of the Wisconsin 17th Company that was working on the railroad near Memphis and tore up parts of the track. A train carrying the remainder of the company was derailed and six men were killed but the remaining members of the company were captured by Confederate forces.
