Davis writes Lucinda to inform her that his health is good and that he is concerned he has not received more recent letters from Lucinda or Madison. He notes they will be leaving Bridgeport soon and heading to Huntsville. Davis details he is expecting a letter from Robert McMichael. John Lippin died from what Davis suspects to be an overdose of whiskey leading to Typhoid. Davis writes that the Rebels left Knoxville hurriedly as General Sherman's troops approached.
