Davis writes to Lucinda noting that he is in good health. He details that they left Chattanooga on the 5th and arrived in Dalton, Georgia today, however they will continue on to Kingston tomorrow. Davis notes that there is no news from the front. He also details that Dalton is the location where Johnston's Rebel Army wintered the previous year. Davis describes the rough hills and plentiful water sources that had made the area a strong defense for the Rebels. Davis notes the parties in their force guarding the Division Wagons including the 18th Wisconsin, 5th Ohio Cavalry, three Companies of the 23rd Missouri, and the Pioneer Corps. Davis writes that he suspects General Sherman will gain possession of Atlanta seeing as he drove the Rebels south of the Chattahoochee River where they had held their best defenses.
