Davis writes to Lucinda noting that he is in good health and has still yet to receive a letter from her. He details that there has been an interruption on the railroad between Cartersville and Nashville and that they have received no mail for three days. Davis writes that the 18th Regiment has not returned and that they are stationed on the railroad between Chattanooga and Nashville. He details that Rebel forces are attacking the railroad frequently in order to prevent communication with General Sherman. Davis notes that they received a telegraphic dispatch from the front stating that Union forces took possession of Atlanta. The letter is continued on September 4. Davis details that he finally received a letter from Lucinda however he suspects there are still several others that have not yet reached him. Davis continues by noting he received a letter from Sister Elisabeth and Mother, who detailed that they had received a letter from Brother William. Davis notes that according to Sister Elisabeth and Mother, Brother William was slightly wounded in the shoulder but is still serving on duty. Davis details that he will send his new picture along with this letter. He concludes by noting that his Regiment has taken the place of some 100 day men causing him to be unsure of when they will leave on furlough.
