Accident occurred on DSS&A near Negaunee
An accident occurred on the Duluth South Shore and Atlantic Railway near Negaunee station on the 21st day of July 1887 at 450 o'clock P.M. caused by: Way freight train east bound failing to stop (as required by law) 200 feet short of the crossing of the Chicago and North Western Railway, whereby they struck the cars of a C&NW train passing the crossing westbound, throwing 4 empty ore cars off the track but doing very little damage, trains being almost at a stand. Engine stood on the crossing when it stopped. Trainmen seem to have used poor judgement in not checking speed of train and getting it under control in time to stop short of crossing. All hands, engineman, fireman, counductor and 3 brakemen, have been dismissed from the company's service. Casualties None.
