Mary Fossum was born in 1927 and passed away in 2020. She came with her husband, Bruce Fossum to Michigan State in 1959. Mary McMillin Fossum became the first Spartan women's golf coach in 1973. Her tenure lasted until her retirement in 1997. During her time as head coach, Fossum's teams captured an unprecedented five consecutive Big Ten championships from 1974-78. The Spartans captured their sixth Big Ten title under Fossum in 1982. From 1973-78, Fossum's teams advanced to the AIAW National Championships, and they also qualified for the 1982 and 1984 NCAA Championships. In 1984, Fossum was honored as the first ever NCAA Midwest Region Coach of the Year. In 1988, she was inducted in the Golf Coaches Hall of Fame. Fossum won the Wisconsin women's golf championship in 1945, 1946, and 1947. One of the many highlights of her career was her match play victory over Mildred (Babe) Didrickson-Zaharias in the 1946 Women's Western Amateur semifinals.
